Island Tartan Autumn Picnic

                                                                                  Hello everyone,

                                                               On one of the first days of autumn I had
                                                               a picnic by the pond.....not ours this
                                                               time but at a friends family home.
                                               

                                                                     The wool blanket/throw on the chair
                                                                     is a treasure because it was made here
                                                                     on the Island by Condon's Woolen mill
                                                                     which closed down in 1989.
                                                                     It is our Island Tartan..... a nice thrift
                                                                     shop find.

This tartan was designed and registered in 1959 by Mrs Elizabeth Jean MacLean Reed of Covehead as a result of a competition to design a tartan for the island.                                                              The colours she chose she described as follows:                                                            The warmth and glow of the fertile soil,                                                            The green of field and tree,                                                            The yellow and brown of Autumn,                                                            The white of surf or a summer snow,                                                            Rust, green, yellow and white,                                                           Yes! That’s our Island Tartan.

                                                 

        A plaid thermos holds my apple cider and

       another plaid throw in case it turns chilly.

                                                                     It is such a tranquil spot to
                                                                     enjoy a book and watch the ducks
                                                                     on the pond.

                                                                     Hot apple cider and a book or two.

Fall Favs

                                                                            Hello everyone,
                                                              It is another beautiful autumn day
                                                              here but we are expecting a heavy
                                                             downpour and windy for the next
                                                             couple of days.
                                                            I was looking through my files for
                                                            some of my previous fall photos
                                                            and picked out some of my favorites.

                                                                  with hot spiced apple cider.

                                                                 . I make spiced apple cider by adding a cinnamon stick,several whole cloves, a few cardamon pods and a few slices of an orange to apple cider..
I bring it to a boil and the simmer for an hour or more. Strain and serve....it is lovely in the fall and makes the house smell so good too!.

                                      Now,  I better get out to the garden and

                                 do a few things before the downpour

hits us.

Happy First Weekend of Autumn

                                                                            Happy Weekend!

                                                          I hope you are enjoying your weekend.

                                                         We will soon be done of our garden tours
                                                         from Japan but this morning we had a smaller
                                                         tour of 16 but 7 of them were blind.It made for
                                                         a different tour
                                                         as scent and touch were much more important.
                                                         I was impressed by how well they managed(each
                                                         one traveled with a caring family member)and
                                                         how happy and enthusiastic they all were.In 3 weeks
                                                         our tours will be over and we will be getting
                                                        the garden ready for winter soon after......how
                                                        time flies.

                                                                   I have been picking some hydrangeas
                                                                   for drying and getting out the fall throws
                                                                   as the last few days there is a hint of
                                                                   fall in the air.Just last week we spent a
                                                                   couple of hours at the beach and now with
                                                                   a nip in the air it is hot apple cider and
                                                                   warm woolly blankets.
                                                                 

                                                                   Still lots of hydrangeas in the
                                                                   garden ~ this one is a pink annabelle.

                                                                            Lila spent a couple of days with
                                                                            me so we went for a walk in our
                                                                            woods and of course a little photo
                                                                            shoot snuck in.

                                                                   A thrift shop wicker bench that I plan
                                                                   to give a fresh coat of paint to soon.

                                                         A couple of days ago there were 10 Canada geese swimming
                                                         on our pond but they were gone the next day.

                                                             My friend Cheryl invited a few friends
                                                             over to her new cottage for tea and I
                                                             had a hard time not jumping in and
                                                             enjoying the lovely view
                                                            of the water and the trees.
                                                            I wonder if Cheryl serves breakfast in bed!

Subtle Porch Changes

                     Hello everyone,

                  We are still enjoying warm sunny clear days

             and I am loving it!

                                                               A few days ago I decided the summer
                                                               look in our porch/entry had to go so I
                                                               made a few subtle changes to give it
                                                               a touch of autumn.

                                                              I added some brown and white transferware
                                                              pieces and ivory linens.

                                                                                 

                                                                        My thrift shop plate rack holds my
                                                                        lacy scarfs.

                                                                             This was my parents old
                                                                             hall stand updated with a
                                                                            couple of coats of paint.

                                                                              I like to display my parasols
                                                                              in it.  

                                                                    Some hydrangeas add some
                                                                    subtle color. So glad to still
                                                                    have warm breezes coming
                                                                    in the open windows..

           My husband and son added the wainscotting

            last winter to the porch. The walls are painted

           Revere Pewter and the wainscotting in white.

                                                                 

                                                    Well, I am finally adding a few fall
                                                                touches around our home and garden~
                                                                hope winter doesn't arrive before I finish!
