Today I am remembering all those who have fought for freedom but especially my Dad (above)who fought overseas in World War 2.
For my Dad although there was hardship in fighting in a war there was also a sweet Dutch girl that became his wife after the war was over.In the photo above my Dad is in the centre,Mom and Dad on the right and on the left my sister and I with my parents(later they had two sons as well).My Dad was a gentle kind and caring man. Although my Dad passed away 14 years ago I am thankful for the memories I have of a loving father.
The older I get the more I appreciate the sacrifice these men and women made for our freedom.
On this Remembrance Day I hope we will all take time to remember them.
This is a photo of that sweet Dutch girl now and she has her own story to tell of growing up in an occupied country,losing a young brother and then leaving her family and homeland behind to come to a far away country to start a new life but that is a whole other story!

ReplyDeleteIt's a very special day and we should remember to say "thank you" for all that those soldiers did for us. Husband Jim is the keynote speaker at our ceremonies at our National Ceremony tomorrow -- I am so proud of him (a 3 tour Viet Nam vet).

What a wonderful posting. What city was your mother from? My father "befriended" a Dutch girl... which she, her husband, and my parents later became life-long friends. She is the only one who is still alive. I'd love to go see her.

Your tribute to your family members is precious, Carolyn. This is truly a day to honor all of them, both from generations ago, and our young men and women in uniform today. All of us must show them our support and gratitude...they deserve honor, not disgrace.

I just adore old photos of men and women from WWI and WWII the facial expression tells the story with a glance. We only have one of my FIL in Italy digging trenches, he was a NJ cop prior to the war, and when he came back he remained one. Even drove that great 'bike' in the winter time. But he so loved his profession. He became the c.o.p. for many years then retiring down to Fl and just prior to his death I sat with him as he told me many many stories that even his children never knew.

ReplyDeleteIt is good that we remember them indeed. I am still grateful for the fact that your father and other soldiers from Canada, Poland and the U.S. liberated our country all those years ago. Because of them we now live in freedom. I recognised the pictures :). Hope your mother is still fine. Have a lovely day!

I went to our Remembrance Day service this morning. My Dad was pilot in the war.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever read Journey Through The Night? A very good read about the German occupation of Holland. It's a children's book but most appropriate for ages 13 plus. Sarah and I loved it.
Wonderful post. It's so important to remember those who have served our country. Also a sweet story about your parents.
