Island Tartan Autumn Picnic

                                                                                  Hello everyone,

On one of the first days of autumn I had
a picnic by the pond.....not ours this
time but at a friends family home.

The wool blanket/throw on the chair
is a treasure because it was made here
on the Island by Condon's Woolen mill
                                                                     which closed down in 1989.
It is our Island Tartan..... a nice thrift
                                                                     shop find.

This tartan was designed and registered in 1959 by Mrs Elizabeth Jean MacLean Reed of Covehead as a result of a competition to design a tartan for the island.

The colours she chose she described as follows:

The warmth and glow of the fertile soil,
The green of field and tree,
The yellow and brown of Autumn,
The white of surf or a summer snow,
                                                           Rust, green, yellow and white,
                                                          Yes! That’s our Island Tartan.

A plaid thermos holds my apple cider and
another plaid throw in case it turns chilly.

It is such a tranquil spot to
enjoy a book and watch the ducks
                                                                     on the pond.
Hot apple cider and a book or two.

Maybe you would like a cup of tea
with our Island tartan?

In case you are interested in this home and
the beautiful setting it happens to be for sale.

You can call Colin at 902-314-5152.

The sun porch has a good view of the pond.

I hope you will have time to go on
                                                                        an autumn picnic someday soon!

                                                                                             Thank you for visiting me,

                                                                                                                       Carolyn

I had a huge tartan fetish going on last winter so I have lots of cosy tartan things to snuggle with this year. Your pictures are wonderful (as usual) xx

What a beautiful spot and old house. It was interesting to read about your PEI tartan which is lovely and a treasure as well. I hope to go for a picnic soon in the orchard when the weather clears again. That was quite a rainstorm we had! I hope you aren't getting as much as we did there today.

What a beautiful old house. I love the setting near to the lake. The new owner is a fortunate man.

Your picnic look delightful Carolyn. I love the way the colours of your island tartan are described.

Happy weekend ahead!

I love your blog cover picture. Did you take that pic? I was wondering if I could use it on my FB cover page with your permission? Thank you

With the design of the house and view of the pond, it should sell quickly. I had no idea there was an island tartan but like the colours chosen, and why.

What a peaceful and serene setting to enjoy a laid back afternoon. Your picnic is lovely Carolyn. Love all the cozy elements and the tartan is beautiful.

Love that pretty home. It reminds me of my own home which has the colonial style too.

Have a lovely week,

Janet

I love the colors that Elizabeth chose to go in the tartan. Somewhere there too must be some white for all the Queen Anne's Lace on the Island. I love that house too!

Another beautiful post with gorgeous photos! I love tartans, too, especially since I began working in a store that sells Celtic (It's pronounced Keltic) items. Learning about the tartans and their history is one of the many fun things I love about working there! Nothing says autumn like plaid!
